Typographical critiques
Alex: I really like this one! I didn't notice any repetition however, so maybe he could implement this with the word creepy. Make it progressively more exaggerated with the 'drips' becoming longer or more diverse. You could possibly make the edges of some letters sharper to resemble teeth or something like that to give it a more 'creepy' feel. I noticed two things with the balance of the page: 1) 'Childish" is very close to the top, so maybe you could bring it down just a tad to balance it better on the page and, 2) there seems to be more negative space than it suggested. I think if you used repetition with one or more of your words, this would help this a bit. I like the fonts you chose for each word, but you could possibly adjust the positions of a couple of words to make the entire piece a bit more unified. For example, 'childish' is kind of out there on its own; bring it in closer proximity to another term to bring the entire piece together. Good job though!
Brianna: I really like the fonts you chose. I noticed there was no repetition with this piece. I thought that if you possibly turned the "A" in ADVENTUROUS in another direction and put it on there again starting there, that might be interesting. Or you could use CREATIVE again, but change the font a bit to so additional creativity while fulfilling the repetition aspect of the assignment. You could change the scale of the words CREATIVE, TRUSTWORTHY and TALKATIVE a bit more to make them more distinct from each other; they seem a little close in size. Lastly, the hierarchy gets a little fuzzy to me after ADVENTUROUS and LOVING. I like each individual term, but I'm not sure where you want me to go next.
Abigail: I love the fonts and styles you used! You could use DEMENTED to fulfill the repetition requirement for this piece by adding it in a few more times in a crazy, demented fashion with your original word as the 'base.' A couple of your terms, ARTISTIC, STUBBORN, are pretty close in size, so maybe you could differentiate a bit more so I know for sure what the hierarchy is of your terms. My eyes kind of bounced around in this piece, so you could possibly stick closer to the rule of thirds to help my eye travel through your design. It would help me find the rhythm you want me to follow. Great job!
Tri: I'm not sure in what order my eye should travel in this design. To improve the rhythm, maybe you could place the words so that you lead me where you want me to go. The proximity of each term is kind of erratic, which is great if that is your goal, but I'm not sure how it unites your entire design. You could improve your scale with the term QUIET by using a lighter font (like with SHY) and making each subsequent copy of the term smaller. That way, you would be better representing the word itself, but getting 'quieter.'

Essay
In this project, I used the elements of scale and proportion to show which adjectives portrayed me in a specific order. For example, DETERMINED, has the largest font, followed by FOCUSED, HARD-WORKING, ORGANIZED, and finally HONEST. This is the order of the adjectives that I chose to describe myself, creating a hierarchy of adjectives.
I positioned the words on the page so that each has its own position, none encroaching on the other. I believe this also shows the balance of various things I have in my life. All in influence others as seen by their proximity to the other adjectives, but none interrupt the other; yet they all fit.
The rhythm of the piece first catches the eye with DETERMINED. It is bold and emphasized by the exclamation points. From there, you can move to FOCUSED, which then points you to HARD-WORKING. Once there, you can travel to ORGANIZED or HONEST, whichever catches the viewer’s eye first.
There is repetition with FOCUSED to emphasize the meaning of the word. In order to properly focus, sometimes you have to see things more than once until it all becomes clear. I have to wear glasses to see clearly, so it’s also sort of indicative of what I see when I don’t have my glasses on to when I do wear them.
I’ve used a variety of fonts and styles to emphasize each word and how I felt it should best be presented. I think this variety also brings the pieces together in an organized unity. The adjectives I chose paint the picture of a certain kind of person and I believe I manipulated their position and style/font in a way to best portray me, or one part of me.
I conformed to the “Rule of Thirds” with the placement of each word in a specific order. DETERMINED begins in the upper left third, takes you to the bottom right third where you move on to the bottom left third with FOCUSED. From there, you’re sent to the top right third with HARD-WORKING, and are allowed to roam freely to ORGANIZED and HONEST.
